Also, beasts and awakened plants tend to have fairly poor Charisma, so their spell attack modifier and spell save DC would suck. But there's nothing to say that the creature would find a suitable patron, or that the pact would grant the creature perks on par with what a player character warlock would receive (the PCs are exceptional and NPCs usually aren't built like PCs). Probably the most plausible way to power up a newly awakened creature would be arrange for it to make a warlock's pact, since warlock is kind of the "shortcut class" in the lore. What's more, many awakened creatures might not have the anatomy to perform spell components (especially somatic components), or would have to utilize unconventional techniques compared to humanoid spellcasters, which might make it even less likely for them to gain spellcasting ability, and slow down their training.
